For Families with Students in Grades 11
Position the Profile. Build the List. Prepare the Application.
Junior year is when the college process becomes real. Students are balancing rigorous academics, testing decisions, extracurricular leadership, and the beginning stages of applications.
The Junior Milestones program provides high—touch guidance during the most critical year of the college journey.
The result: a clear college strategy, a balanced application list, and a student prepared to apply with confidence.
Why Junior Year Is Pivotal
Junior year is when preparation translates into positioning. Students begin researching colleges, identifying fits, and preparing the components that shape applications.
Thoughtful strategy at this stage helps students:
Identify colleges that match their goals and interests
Build a balanced application list
Develop compelling essays and application themes
Prepare for admissions opportunities across multiple institutions
Guidance during junior year helps students move into senior year organized, confident, and prepared.
Who This Program Is For
The Junior Milestones program is designed for families who want:
Expert guidance during the most consequential year of the admissions process
A thoughtful and balanced college application list
Clear insight into admissions opportunities and potential challenges
Support developing a compelling application narrative and essays
Confidence that financial fit and family priorities are part of the decision process
“At this age, students are so focused on themselves. The Sum Total program provides exercises that push them to reflect on their role in the family - how their choices affect everyone, and how everyone’s choices affect them.” - School Counselor
HOW IT WORKS
How the Junior Milestones Program Works
Junior Milestones focuses primarily on the student's work during this critical year, while ensuring parents remain informed and aligned with key decisions.
JUNIOR FALL
College Research + Testing Strategy
JUNIOR WINTER
College List + Major Exploration
JUNIOR SPRING
Essay Development + Application Strategy
Junior Milestones engagements typically span 6-9 months during the student’s junior year.
Student Strategy Sessions
The Student Sessions are one-on-one time between the student and their counselor, and what they share there stays private unless there is a safety concern. Junior year is where the profile comes into focus, so these sessions do the close, personal work the family sessions then build on.
See exactly where your profile stands. Using the same categories colleges and training programs actually weigh, you map which parts of your profile are strong and which are still thin, so you spend junior year on the things that move the needle instead of guessing.
Find the story your application tells. You work out the through-line that connects your courses, your activities, and how you spend your time, then learn how to make that story clear to an admissions or program reviewer rather than leaving it buried.
Build a list that is actually yours. You sort schools and pathways by real fit and real reasons, separating the options that excite you from the ones that are on the list because someone else expects them.
Make this year's decisions on purpose. Course rigor, a testing plan, where to go deep in your activities, and how to use the summer all become one intentional plan, so the highest-stakes year of high school is something you steer.
Walk in able to speak for yourself. Every session is built to grow your ownership of the process, with your counselor as a private sounding board, so by the end you can name your goals, ask the right questions, and drive your own next steps.

Parenting Strategy Session
The Parent Strategy Session is a focused session for the caregivers guiding the student. It opens Junior Milestones before any student or family work begins, so the adults in the student's corner start the year aligned and informed.
Start from today's admissions reality, not yesterday's. You get a clear, current briefing on how applications, fit, and financial aid actually work right now, so your plan is built on facts rather than the process you remember or the version you have heard about.
Name your hopes and your worries before they reach your student. This is the space to be honest about your expectations and fears, and to separate your anxieties from your student's, so the pressure to perform stays off the student in the months ahead.
Learn how to support without taking over. You leave with a practical framework for staying involved and aligned while letting your student own the process, plus a clear picture of how confidentiality in the student sessions builds their trust and voice.

Family Sessions
Junior Milestones Family Sessions are coached working sessions where the student and the people in their corner sit down together to do the real work of eleventh grade: sharpening the list, shaping the story, and getting decision-ready before application season begins.
Turn the college list into a shared decision, not a solo guess. Sessions give the whole family a structured space to pressure-test the list together, so the schools and pathways that make the final cut are there for reasons everyone understands.
Get ahead of the trade-offs before they become deadline fights. Cost versus fit, reach versus likely, a four-year degree versus a trades or career path. We weigh these together now, while there is still time to think them through calmly.
Align on money and aid before the offers arrive. Families leave with a shared, realistic picture of what college or training will cost and how it gets paid for, so spring of senior year holds no surprises.
Keep everyone supporting the student on the same page. Parents, stepparents, grandparents, mentors, caseworkers, and other advocates are welcome to take part, so the people behind the student are working from one plan instead of competing advice.
Put the student in the driver's seat. Every session is built to grow the student's ownership of the process, with caregivers as partners rather than project managers.
Replace junior-year panic with a plan. You walk into application season prepared and aligned, not scrambling.

“This program helps a student define themselves a little more, rather than letting the process define who they are.” - School Counselor
Built by Leaders Who've Been on Both Sides
Our curriculum was developed by professionals with decades of experience inside university admissions and financial aid. Our counselors bring expertise across public and private institutions, NCAA recruitment, and arts and conservatory admissions.
We didn't learn this from textbooks. We learned it from sitting across from thousands of families — and seeing which ones had the conversations early enough to make them count.
